%X Different types of grasslands of the South Brazilian Plateau in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, were defined after a fieldwork at the end of winter time. A Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper image was used as a support for a Maximum Likelihood classification of 9 grasslands types: (i) tall and (ii) short cespitous grasses, (iii) tall cespitous grass after burning, (iv) short cespitous grass after burning, (v) short cespitous grass sprouting, (vi) mixture of cespitous and prostrate grasses with Baccharis sp., (vii) prostrate grasses, (viii) swamp grassland and (ix) planted winter pasture. The accuracy of classification was around 64%, with some confusion among spectrally similar classes, such as tall and short grasses, burned grasslands, etc. The fire dynamics in the area was unveiled, confirming the importance of burning and grazing as the conditioning factors for the grassland physiognomies. The area presented cespitous grasses as the dominant cover. Future work will assess different spectral and spacial resolution orbital data, acquired in different seasons.
